Professor Xu mainly researches into fashion design theories and application and fashion design and engineering. She mainly gives lectures of Theoretic Research into Fashion Structure and has published five books and 20 academic research papers. She has undertaken several provincial research topics. Subsequently, she has won the second prize of National Excellent Teaching Achievement Award, the first prize of Tianjin Municipal Excellent Teaching Achievement Award, the third prize of Ministry Level Scientific and Technologic Progress, Tianjin Municipal Excellent Teacher and Top Teachers of Tianjin Municipal Institutions of Higher Learning. Social part-time work: council member of China Fashion Designers Association; executive member of China Committee of Asian Fashion Joint Association; council member of China Fashion & Color Association; member of Higher Vocational College of Textile and Apparel Professional Teaching Steering Committee; member of Fashion Times Consultative Committee; editorial and proofread member of China Textile & Apparel Press.
